Program Description

The Master of Arts Degree in Psychology is designed for students whose primary interest is clinical/community psychology or health psychology.  Our program provides students with a solid academic background by giving them an opportunity to complete advanced coursework and further develop their research skills by working closely with a faculty mentor on a research project or thesis.  Faculty research areas include: Neuropsychology, malingering, neurocognitive and psychological issues in HIV infection, HIV prevention, mental health models of Type II diabetes among Hispanic college students, risk behavior among African American youth and women, health disparities, women’s mental health and well-being, adolescent health behavior, psychosocial functioning in children and college students with learning disorders/ADHD.  Graduate students in the MA Psychology program are also placed in a wide variety of practicum sites where they learn to provide direct services to clients, employees, and patients.  Opportunities are also available for graduate students to work as teaching assistants in the Department of Psychology.

Career Possibilities

The MA Psychology program is designed for students who want to strengthen their academic record in preparation for applying to Ph.D. or Psy.D. programs.  Many graduates from California State University, Dominguez Hills have been accepted into doctoral programs at universities across the country.  Others choose to begin careers in industry, mental health, community agency and education settings.  Graduates who complete additional coursework can also pursue licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist..

Graduate School Possibilities

Many graduates from our Master's program pursue doctoral studies. Our graduates are successful in gaining admission to and graduating from the doctoral programs of their choice.

Admission Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science/Arts Degree or equivalent from a fully accredited institution.
  • Completion of GRE Aptitude Test or Miller Analogy Test.
  • At least a "B" average in the last 60 semester units attempted (excluding lower division and extension units).
  • Successful completion of the following undergraduate courses or their equivalent, with at least a “B” average:
    • PSY 230  Elementary Statistical Analysis in Psychology (3)
    • PSY 235  Introduction to Research Methods (3)
    • PSY 330  Behavioral Statistics and Research Design (3) or PSY 331  Measurement in Psychology (3)
    • PSY 360  Theories of Personality (3)
    • PSY 363  The Abnormal Personality (3)
    • PSY 464  Introduction to Clinical Psychology (3)

Admission Procedures

A. Mail the following documents directly to:

  • Departmental application for admission to the Master of Arts in Psychology program (Clinical track).
  • One official transcript from each college attended.
  • Official score report of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for General Aptitude or the Miller Analogy Test (MAT). Call the Testing Office (243-3909) to obtain schedule for the GRE and the MAT.
  • Three letters of recommendation.

B. You may be asked to attend a personal interview as part of the selection procedure.
CSubmission of university application ( CSU Mentor) and supporting documents.
D. All documents listed under item "A" must be on file in the Department of Psychology in order for your application to be considered for entrance to the program.
