About the Program
The goal of our MBRS RISE Program at California State University, Dominguez Hills is to infuse a biomedical research culture into the science departments at CSUDH thereby making biomedical research an important component of research culture into our institution. This 4-year grant funds 12 undergraduate research assistant positions.
On admission to the program, MBRS RISE students are integrated as research assistants into active research laboratories at CSUDH, Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA, and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. Students select a research mentor who will establish a nature and scope of the research project best suited to the student*s level and interests. The opportunity to participate in active research gives MBRS RISE students an edge in establishing successful scientific careers.
The Program provides funds for developmental activities that are designed to accomplish our objective. These activities include workshops in bioinformatics, writing comprehension skills, psychology careers, GRE preparation, student career development, Latinas Juntas and a biomedical research seminar series.
Our overall goal is to increase the interest, skills, and competitiveness of students in pursuit of research careers and improve laboratory experiences for students. We are geared towards creating a sense of community among our biomedical researchers that will carry from the classroom to the research laboratory.
Financial Support
The MBRS RISE Program is funded in part by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Student participation is year round. During the academic year, students are limited by academic course work, but during breaks, they are expected to devote a greater amount of time to research. The position pays $10/hr for a maximum of 20 h/wk during the academic year and a maximum of 40h/wk during the winter, spring, and summer breaks. Participants can earn up to $13,000/yr. In addition to student*s regular research salary, the program provides funds for research laboratory supplies and a travel allowance for participants to attend scientific meetings.
