Fall 04 G.E. Math Prerequisites

Beginning Fall 2004 and after, MAT 009 is cancelled and is replaced by MAT 095, Intermediate Algebra, a 1 unit course. There are some other changes associated with the new course.

What remains unchanged:
  1. Non-exempt students must take the ELM.
  2. ELM exemptions (SAT, ACT, AP etc) remain unchanged.
  3. For ELM scores lower than 50, students must register in an appropriate remedial course.
  4. For ELM scores 50 or greater, students should enroll in a General Education level math course.
Fall 2004 changes:
  1. ELM placement scores:
    • 0 - 40 MAT 003 Beginning Algebra 3 units
    • 42 - 48 MAT 095 Intermediate Algebra 1 unit
  2. The prerequisites for MAT 095 are:
    • MAT 003, or
    • Beginning Algebra course at another college, C grade or higher, or
    • An ELM score of 42.
  3. MAT 095 is a one unit course. The course is graded CR/NC and remains a non-baccalaureate course. Sections meet two days a week, for five weeks. Students who do not pass the first section may be able to retake MAT 095 in the the next five week section, if room is available.

Students should register in the first five week section as long as there are open seats, and then the second section if the first five week sections are full.
