Program Description
In January 1996 the American Psychological Association (APA) submitted a grant application to the National Institute for General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) entitled Developing Minority Biomedical Research Talent in Psychology: A Collaborative and Systemic Approach for Strengthening Institutional Capacity for Recruitment, Retention, Training, and Research. APA received a 2-year grant for $750,000 and later a 3-year continuation grant for $1,428,000. Five regional Centers of Excellence were established to develop programs to increase the number of students of color interested in biomedical research careers in psychology, and to facilitate their matriculation into graduate programs. CSU Dominguez Hills is part of the Western Regional Center of Excellence with UCLA and Santa Monica College. The program at CSU Dominguez Hills has received a total of $77,500 to date (with an additional $20,000 committed for 2002-2003) to implement the program. Each year ten high achieving psychology students are selected to participate in the program. These scholars are mentored by faculty in psychology, participate in research programs, and receive other training and support. A total of nine full time psychology faculty have played significant roles in implementing the program at Dominguez Hills.
