The expression of milk proteins by mammary epithelial cells (MEC) is dependent on both stimulation by the pituitary hormone prolactin and the correct engagement of MEC to the extracellular matrix mediated by integrins. Currently, we are studying the intracellular mechanism(s) involved in coordinating these signaling events, namely whether lipid rafts - discrete membrane platforms enriched in cholesterol and sphingolipids - play a role in mediating this crosstalk.
