Newly Created NBS Advisory Board This last year the College was successful in creating the NBS Advisory Board. The Board is dedicated to the continuous improvement of the programs in the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences. The role of the Board is two-fold. First, members provide advice, opinions and ideas on how to improve the College, including curriculum, programs, student recruitment and placement, laboratories and equipment, as well as opportunities for grants and contracts. The Board will be especially focused on emerging issues and trends in science and technology. Second, the Board helps to improve the visibility and enhance the reputation of the programs in the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences in the scientific and general community. The current Board members are as follows: Mr. Joe Aro (Director, SouthBay Economic Development Partnership); Dr. Steven Bloch (Senior Research Associate, Auto Club of Southern California); Dr. David Chi (Chiropractor; CSUDH alum; CSUDH Adjunct Professor of Biology); Dr. Evelyn Childress (CSUDH Professor Emeritus of Biology); Dr. Michael Daugherty (Retired VP from Aerospace Corporation; former CSUDH Associate Professor of Physics); Jim Dear (Mayor, City of Carson); Dr. Jackson Henry (CSUDH Emeritus Professor of Mathematics); Mr. Loren House (Supplier Diversity Specialist, the Boeing Company); Mr. Steven M. Jacobs (Division Staff Operations Office, Tactical Systems Division, Northrop Grumman Mission System); Dr. Stewart Laidlaw (Director, Compliance & Educational Outreach & Professor of Medicine/Academic Administrator, Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center); Mr. Todd Rodgers (Captain, Carson Sheriff’s Substation; Mayor of Lakewood; two time CSUDH alum); Dr. Sam Wiley (CSUDH Professor Emeritus of Physics); and Mr. Jan Vogel (Executive Director, South Bay Workforce Investment Board). |

Greetings from the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences (NBS) at California State University, Dominguez Hills. This is the first Newsletter from NBS and we hope that you find it both interesting and informative. NBS was formed in the Spring of 2004 when the University underwent a major reorganization. Prior to the reorganization, the departments located in NBS were part of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), which constituted about two-thirds of the University. During the reorganization, CAS was split into NBS and the College of Liberal Arts (CLA). NBS has the following departments/programs: Biology; Chemistry; Computer Science; Earth Sciences (Geology and Geography); Mathematics; Physics; Psychology; Sociology; and Behavioral Sciences. I came to CSUDH in August of 2004 as the Founding Dean of NBS. Prior to this appointment, I was a faculty member and administrator at San Diego State University for 31 years. Much has happened in NBS in the last two years. Most importantly, new faculty members have replaced over 25% of the NBS faculty who have been retiring. These new faculty are committed to both teaching and research and look forward to involving their students in research projects. I hope that you will enjoy reading this Newsletter and learning about all the wonderful things that are happening in the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences at CSUDH. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or news that you would like included in future issues of the NBS Newsletter. Our phone number is 310 243-2547 and my email is chohm@csudh.edu. Best Regards, Charles F. Hohm Dean |
